Smithsonian Barbie

Carrie spent last week at an archaeological site with her class. The site was in southern Colorado near the New Mexico border.

The kids camped out for the week. Carrie had a great time. Apparently they had a couple of days of snow (they were in high country 9000 feet).

Carrie takes her final in Archaeology tomorrow, then 4 1/2 days off for block break.

I was looking for something about archaeology to include here and found this...

Polly at Holderness this Weekend

Polly is on the Holderness Webite again! Here is a picture of her at the "bouncy things" event held Saturday night. Sorry the picture is fuzzy, that's how it appears on the website. Click on Holderness Webite to see a desciption of the event and other pictures.

Polly had a shut out Saturday against Vermont Academy. She was the keeper for the entire game. Holderness won 3-0.

Construction Update

The oak beams shown are hand hewn and came from a barn in Berks County. They will be used to support the opening in the stone wall in the kitchen and the porch. John is treating the beams with linseed oil.

All the windows have been installed and the stucco is scheduled to be done this week.

Landscape Plan

Here is the landscape plan we are hoping to execute. In order to get some breathing room at the addition, the driveway is shifted about 4 feet closer to the garage. The stone wall shown will support the driveway with a planting bed (probably boxwood) on the edge of the drive. A small picket fence atop the wall should help the feel of a horizontal line on the slope.

Hopefully the area enclosed with the walls will feel like a courtyard.

To see the plans clearly click on the pictures.

An Oldie But A Goodie

I was looking to see if the Braefield Farm website had been picked up by google yet and hit upon this old entry on the Holderness Website. I hadn't seen this before, I don't think Carrie has either.

The Advanced Spanish Prize
Carrie Evans has taken four years of Spanish at Holderness, finishing in the AP Spanish Language course. Her unfailing persistence and tremendous hard work have allowed her to progress significantly with her skills. In the AP course, Carrie has studied the lyrical drama of García Lorca and the dense prose of García Márquez. In her time here, she has gone from a shy, reticent freshman in Spanish 2 to a confident and proficient speaker and writer of the language. We are very happy to commend her achievement in the study of Spanish language and literature.

Soccer

Polly played her first soccer game for Holderness last Saturday. Holderness won 3-2 and apparently scored all 5 goals.

Polly played in the goal for the first half.

Update:
Holderness won their second game, they played New Hampton School, Wednesday (9/22) 3-0. Polly scored a goal in the second half. She was the keeper in the first half.

Update:
I found a write up of the New Hampton game on the Holderness Webite.

The Girls' JV1 team traveled to New Hampton for their first game of the season! During the first half, Sharlyn Harper scored two goals for the Bulls with an assist from Maresa Nielson. Polly Evans stepped out of goal in the second half to play forward and scored the third goal for Holderness! Stephanie Allen and Page McCargo did an awesome job anchoring our defense. Midfielders Emily Capaul and Leah Woolson both had several shots on goal

A very nice email from Polly's Pennsylvania soccer coach.

Hi Nancy,

I just wanted to express a good luck & fond farewell to Polly on behalf of the team. It was a pleasure having her on the team as she was instrumental in our victories. Hopefully, she'll be able to join us next year. Good Luck. She's a wonderful young lady, and a fine athlete. We'll miss her ..... jw

General Information

I wanted to post some general information for family and friends who look at this webpage.

Click on the highlighed text. These are links, usually to other pictures, and are often in my view amusing.

We welcome comments. You can comment without creating an account just click 'posting as Anonymous'. All comments come to us as email so we will see your comment even if you post from an older entry. We do not however get your email address with your comment so if you need a response by email, please include your address.

I have redone several pictures to sharpen the picture quality. You can isolate most pictures to print or save by right clicking, however I recommend using the original for better picture quality (during uploading the pictures are compressed which reduces the quality of the picture). Just ask and I will email the originals to you.

The envelope at the bottom of each post allows you to send an email of the post to anyone you like. The email is essentially a brief description of the post and a link back to the post at the webpage.

Contact information for Carrie and Polly are on entries made in September. If you want to find these enties at a later time just look at the right side of the webpage and you will see the archives listings. Look at the September archives and you will find their addresses and phone numbers under the back to school posts.

I accidentally made the website private. It is back in the public domain and should be picked up by google in a week or two. In the meantime you can always hit the link with a google search of braefieldfarm, this must be typed as one word.

In addition to serving as a photo album and comunication tool this website is a family archive. I am hoping that the girls will enjoy looking back at comments made here by coaches, teachers, friends, and family.

News From Sargent Dorm

Dear Parents of my Dear Advisees,

I have just shooed the last girls off to study hall after our first advisee/advisor dinner in my Sargent apartment. With heaping plates of pasta, we chatted about our fall sports teams, the red sox, and told fish stories (mostly goldfish stories). It was the first time that I have had alone with all 8 of my advisee girls, and I am throughly enjoying getting to know them. They are a friendly, supportive group and, as clear from our conversations share the goal of having a close-knit, respectful, and fun dorm.

After helpings of seconds, we played a thinly disguised 'getting to know you' game. I had been racking my brain to come up with something that wasn't too hokey, and that they hadn't done before. I literally tripped over my inspiration on the way to the kitchen and came up with the following question 'If you were a shoe, what would you be, and why?'. They submitted anonymous answers then we tried to guess who wrote what. Though apprehensive about how this idea would fly, they got into it and I loved the responses I recieved. Can you find your daughter's in the following answers?

A humble flip-flop-the popular choise...because:
I can be comfortable and good looking
They are comfy and well they are just comfy and go with everything
They don't smell
They are easy to slide on and off and friendly to your feet

Also:
Work boots because they are my favorite shoe
Bowling shoe because you get to meet a lot of people
A cowboy boot because I'd be bigger than everyone else
A high heel because it makes people tall

Afterwards we got down to serious business, and reviewed the rules and expectations. The girls who have been around for a while were great at answering the questions of the ones new to Holderness. After this round of advice and insight into how to have a successful year, it was time for an exceedingly silly session of charades. They could have done this for hours I think, but study hall beckoned.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful daughters with me. I hope we stay in close contact this year. I am excited about the postive energy in this dorm and have high hopes for a great year!

Best regards,

Erica Lipps

Construction Update

We are still waiting for three windows but Scott and his guys did get some work done while we were in New Hampshire.

The backdoor and a window in the dining area were installed. The framing for the closets in the mudroom was done. The gutters installed, except for downspouts, and the porch has been trimmed out (I think there is a little more to do here).

I talked to Dave Monteith and he is hoping to come by this week and do the driveway cut and regrading.

The painters have finished at Jim and Margaret's but we need to put the storm window frames back up. (I will post pictures soon)

Many thanks for all your help while we were away. The cats were especially grateful.
